Canada will face the U.S. tonight for the gold medal at the World Junior Hockey Championship. The U.S. got by Russia in a shootout 4-3 while Canada downed Sweden 5-2 as Julien Gauthier scored two goals including an empty netter.
In the “Q”, Phelix Martineau’s second goal of the game late in the second period was the game winner, as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles doubled up on the Saint John Sea Dogs 6-3. Massimo Carozza had three goals for Cape Breton. The Sea Dogs play the Acadie-Bathurst Titan tomorrow night at Harbour Station.
In the NHL, Max Pacioretty scored in overtime for the second night in a row to give Montreal a 4-3 win over Dallas….The New York Rangers won for the fourth time in their last five games, 5-2 over Philadelphia and are now tied with Columbus for the most wins in the league….Anaheim shut out Detroit 2-0….Elsewhere, it was Winnipeg 4 Florida 1….Calgary 4 Colorado 1 and Vancouver 3 Arizona 0 with Ryan Miller picking up the shutout.
