Saint John has begun cracking down on vehicle owners who are not following new alternate-side parking rules.
City officials said 17 tickets were issued in north, east and west areas on Friday night.
It came just hours after the city said its month-long education efforts had wrapped up and it would begin enforcing the new rules, which took effect in early January.
Drivers must now park on the odd-numbered side of the street for the first 15 days of the month and the even-numbered side during the rest of the month.
“This schedule is in effect day and night and allows for efficient snow removal in winter as well as street sweeping, maintenance and infrastructure repair in the warmer months,” the city said in a previous news release.

Before the changes, an alternate-side parking schedule was limited to overnight hours during the winter season. Vehicles could park on both sides of the street during the day.
The city also issued 30 tickets Friday night in the south-central peninsula, where alternate-side parking has been in place for years.
