Top Doctor, Former MLA Among Order Of N.B. Recipients

New Brunswick’s chief medical officer of health is one of the 10 newest recipients of the Order of New Brunswick.

Officials announced the latest recipients of the province’s highest honour on Thursday morning.

Dr. Jennifer Russell is being recognized for her “steadfast and outstanding leadership and commitment, and for the compassion she showed” throughout the pandemic.

The latest recipients also include two former MLAs from two different political parties.

Former New Brunswick NDP leader Elizabeth Weir is being recognized for her “exceptional service and leadership dedicated to the promotion of equality and social justice.”

Progressive Conservative MLA Madeleine Dubé, who represented the Edmundston area for nearly 20 years, is being honoured for her “unwavering and enduring commitment to improving the lives of her fellow New Brunswickers.”

Ralph Thomas of Saint John, the founder of the New Brunswick Black History Society, is being recognized for his advocacy and promotion of diversity, inclusion, and human rights.

Huberte Gautreau from Moncton, who co-founded the Crossroads for Women transition house in 1981, is being honoured for her work in social justice and human rights.

Wes Armour of Moncton-based Armour Transportation Services is being recognized for his “substantial role in the province’s economic development … and for his role as an informal ambassador for New Brunswick.”

Also on the list are Edward Barrett from Woodstock, Armand Caron from Shippagan, David Christie from Harvey (Albert County), and Constantine Passaris from Fredericton.

“New Brunswick is an exceptional province because of the people who use their talents to serve their communities and their province,” Premier Blaine Higgs said in a news release.

“Each of the 2021 recipients is an example of what can be accomplished when thoughtful, committed and passionate people put their hands to work to make a difference for their families, friends, communities and New Brunswickers.”

The recipients from this year and last year will be invested into the Order at ceremonies in Fredericton on Nov. 4.

The Order of New Brunswick was established in 2000 to recognize individuals who have demonstrated a high level of excellence and achievement in their particular field. Since its inception, more than 170 individuals have been invested into the Order.
