If you have been a a City Transit bus over the last few days, you may have received a pamphlet on the financial crisis facing the bus system in Saint John. The pamphlets warn of possible cuts in the spring.
The head of the Transit Union, Tom McGraw warns the city’s bus system has been starved of adequate funding for years and now the buses are getting long in the tooth, in need of replacement.
Common Councillor Donna Reardon, who chairs the Transit Commission, has warned her fellow council members that to achieve a balanced budget, City Transit would have to cut service by as much as 25 per cent.
McGraw says even if the transit budget is increased by 2 per cent, that would not be enough.
