Trucking Association Says Proposed Shutdown A Bad Idea

A proposed 24 hour shutdown by transport truck drivers is being frowned upon by the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association.

Posts about the shutdown have been circulating on social media this week.

This is in protest of new rules for rotational workers that go into effect on March 26th.

The new rules stipulate, those who get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, will not have to self-isolate. But those who do not get the shot, will still have to self-isolate for 14 days.

Executive Director of the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association Jean Marc Picard is advising against the shut down, “I understand not everyone wants to get the vaccine and it is their right, but to pull a stunt like this just makes the industry look bad. We are essential and we need our drivers. This type of event is not encouraged by the association.”

Picard says this will really disrupt the supply chain and will end up causing more work and headaches for trucking companies and public safety and people on the roads, “It just really not a good idea.”

He doesn’t believe there is a need for a blockade just to make a point, “They can talk to their employer and build their case, but to create this much havoc in the industry and the supply chain, there are some repercussions and some consequences and it certainly isn’t something we want to encourage.”

Picard says he has spoken to the province about this and public safety, just to give them a heads up. He is hoping this would evolve into anything, but as a precaution, he did forward the information to the province.
