At the Pan Am games, Canada won gold in women’s basketball with an 81-73 win over the U.S. and in women’s baseball, Canada beat Cuba 13-1. Maxime Potvin of Quebec City earned Canada’s first taekwondo medal with a silver.

In the Majors, the Red Sox lost a doubleheader to the Los Angeles Angels 11-1 and 7-3 to fall 9 games behind the American League East leading New York Yankees. Albert Pujols of the Angels had three homers to pass Mike Schmidt for 15th place on the all time list.

A report in USA Today claims the Detroit Tigers will make pitcher David Price and outfielder Yeonis Cespedes, who will be free agents, available before the trade deadline at the end of the month.

Sea Dogs defenceman Thomas Chabot, who was drafted in the first round by Ottawa, has been named to Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Summer Development Camp.

The Sea Dogs Foundation is joining up with six non-profit groups to launch the Big 50/50. It’s an electronic raffle with two dollar tickets with a unique number that can be played every week. TThe fundraising effort will support local charities like the Brighten Group at the Regional hospital, the Rotary clubs in Saint John and in the KV and the Y’s Men’s Club. The name of the winner will be announced on Tuesdays on The Wave.
