Tuesday Morning Sports For May 9th

In the NHL playoffs, Andre Burakovsky scored twice and Nicklas Backstrom got his sixth of the playoffs as Washington defeated Pittsburgh 5-2 to force a Game 7 in their Eastern Conference semifinal. This is the fourth time the two teams will meet in a winner take all. The Penguins have won each of the previous three. Sidney Crosby, just a week after suffering another concussion, crashed head first into the boards and was slow getting up.

Saint John Sea Dogs forward Julien Gauthier has been suspended for two games by the “Q” for a check to the head. The Sea Dogs are in Boisbriand tonight for game 3 of the President’s Cup final, holding a two games to nothing lead.

In the Majors, Brett Gardner and Matt Holliday homered while Masahiro Tanaka won his fifth consecutive start as the New York Yankees beat Cincinnati 10-4 for their sixth victory in a row……Baltimore kept pace in the American League East with a 6-4 win over Washington…..Marcus Stroman pitched six shutout innings as the Toronto Blue Jays downed Cleveland 4-2. In other play, it was St. Louis 9 Miami 4…..NY Mets 4 San Francisco 3….Kansas City 7 Tampa Bay 3…..Oakland 3 Los Angeles Angels 2….Los Angeles Dodgers 12 Pittsburgh 1 and San Diego 5 Texas 1.

In the National Basketball League, it’s crunch time for the Saint John Riptide as they host the Island Storm in the fifth and deciding game of their opening round series. Tipoff is at 7:00.

In the NBA, it was Golden State 121 Utah 95 to win the series in 4 straight.
