At the U.S Open Tennis Tournament, Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov cruised to a straight sets win over Russia’s Daniil Medvedev. Shapovalov will face eighth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in the second round. Also, Maria Sharapova stunned second-seed Simona Halep 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in her opening round match. Sharapova is a wild card entry this year in her first grand slam appearance since last year.

In the NHL, the Philadelphia Flyers announced they will retire Eric Lindros’ number 88 on January 18. Lindros appeared in 486 games for the Flyers over eight seasons, notching 659 points. He was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame last fall.
