Twenty-Five Years For Confederation Bridge

History was made 25 years ago.

The Confederation Bridge was officially opened to traffic on May 31, 1997.

The 12.9 kilometre link officially joined New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island and eliminated ferry service between the two provinces.

It is the longest bridge over ice covered waters in the world.

Construction on the bridge began in the fall of 1993, with over 5,000 workers

The cost to build this bridge phenomenon was $1.3 billion.

PEI politicians are hoping to see the bridge renamed to Epekwitk Crossing, a traditional Mi’kmaq name for Prince Edward Island.

They voted unanimously in the legislature in favour of the name change in April, but it must first be approved by the federal government.
