Planetary Conjunction In The Southern Sky

The rest of the summer is a good time to keep an eye on the skies with plenty of celestial activity according to local astronomer Chris Curwin.

This is, of course, the time of the year for the annual Perseids meteor shower but Curwin says there is also going to be a conjunction of two planets.

“When we have two celestial bodies that seem to occupy the same kind of space in the sky we call it conjunction, our moon Friday night will be very close to Jupiter for one conjunction, on Sunday night we have one with the Moon and beautiful ringed Saturn, stated Curwin.

You should be able to easily spot both planets according to Curwin.

“Just look south and the fourth brightest object in the sky is Jupiter and if you put your fist out and use three fist-widths away to the left you will find Saturn”.

A small three-inch telescope will give you a chance to have a great look at Saturn.

“You will see an identification of the rings, you might not see the space between the ring and the planet itself, a little bit larger telescope is required for that,” stated Curwin.
