Two Saint John Schools Want Rainbow Crosswalk On Manawagonish Road

The City of Saint John has been asked to help two schools that want to have a Rainbow Crosswalk on Manawagonish Road.

Barn Hill and Saint Rose approached Councillor Greg Norton who brought the matter before his council colleagues and read a portion of the letter he said summed up the intent of having a rainbow crosswalk.

“The visual representation of a rainbow crosswalk would promote the themes of diversity and acceptance in an area that has high traffic from our schools and our community,” Norton read, “our vision incorporates the colours of the rainbow flag which internationally represents LGBTQ+.”

Councillor Gary Sullivan thinks it is an excellent idea.

“In bringing this to council this makes it a policy of council that says this is something we endorse, it’s something we encourage and where resources are available we want a partnership with anyone in the community who wants to do it. So, thank you very much and I’m 110-percent in favour.”

The motion was passed unanimously and the city will now work with the gay straight alliance at the schools and student councils to make the rainbow crosswalk project a reality. The City will also use this as a template for any future requests for rainbow crosswalks in Saint John.
