U de M Students Face Housing Crunch

About 60 students attending the Université de Moncton this fall still haven’t found a place to live.

The U de M student federation says the situation has improved somewhat since about 120 students were on the waiting list for housing a week ago.

President Jean-Sébastien Léger says it’s especially hard for international students who have no support systems here.

“The housing market has a a limited supply – especially an extremely limited supply of affordable housing near campus,” he notes.

“That situation continues to grow. It’s a continuous concern for students. So we are worried about that.”

All 640 residence beds on the U de M campus are full for the first time.

Léger says a recent plea for help from the community has helped some students find a place.

As a short-term option, the university has secured preferential rates at hotels.

Anyone who has a room to rent should contact the Department of Student Services at the university at 506-858-4000.
