If you’ve been to UNB Saint John recently, you’ve likely noticed a colourful rainbow crosswalk along Tucker Park Road.
Student council members approached the university in June after the city agreed to paint its own crosswalk for Pride Week.
Caitlin Grogan, vice-president external, tells us the university quickly said ‘yes’ and offered to pay for the paint and labour.
“It was actually a really amazing thing for the university to offer us,” says Grogan, “because we’ve heard a lot of stories of administrations at other universities really pushing back and not wanting to have rainbow crosswalks on their campus.”

Grogan says the crosswalk sends a really great message that the university is inclusive and everyone is welcome.
She says the crosswalk has only been there for a couple of weeks but they’ve already received tons of positive feedback.
“We’ve been contacted by some other student unions who are looking to create similar crosswalks on their campus, they’ve come to us for advice on they can go forward,” says Grogan.
“I really hope to see more popping up across New Brunswick and the Maritimes shortly.”
