It hasn’t been open for a year yet and Saint John’s Youth Shelter is closing at the end of this month.
We asked Kit Hickey from Safe Harbour’s Board of Directors why closure is necessary.
She says they are in the untenable position of not having enough funding to meet their staffing obligations.
The Board of Director’s Secretary/Treasurer Kit Hickey tells us they absolutely saw this coming.
She says it’s public knowledge that a lean was placed against the building by the contractor and she adds it was not an easy decision to make.
Hickey says the contractor had to protect their financial interests and the lean on the building means the fundraising opporotunities dried up.
She says they will be working towards re-opening the facility saying they are 100 per cent committed to that.
The staff have been given layoff notices and plans are being developed for the young people currently staying at the facility.
Safe Harbour is set to close its doors on January 29th.
