UPDATE: Vacant Rooming House In South End Badly Damaged By Fire

A fire at a vacant rooming house in the city’s south end causing major water and smoke damage throughout the building and heavy fire damage to the basement and first floor bedroom which is where the fire was located.

Acting platoon chief Roy Byers says the first crews to arrive at 16 Pagan Place were met with very heavy smoke and when inside the building firefighters encountered high heat and zero visibility which made finding the site of the fire very difficult. They had to be pulled from the structure because of deteriorating conditions.

Four people were evacuated from a St. James Street home as a precaution for about two hours.

Nobody was hurt.

City Police say a preliminary investigation suggests that this fire is suspicious.
