Tragedy on Grand Manan Island where a plane crash has claimed the lives of a pilot and Ambulance New Brunswick paramedic.
Another pilot and a registered nurse with the Grand Manan Hospital survived the crash which happened just after 5am today in a wooded area near the airport—we are told they were taken to hospital in Saint John to be treated for their injuries. The Piper PA-31 aircraft was on its way back to the island after bringing a patient from the Grand Manan Hospital to the Saint John Regional Hospital when it crashed. There was no patient onboard the plane and no one on the ground was hurt.
The Interim President of Ambulance New Brunswick Paul Ward extending condolences to the friends, families and co-workers of the two killed, and says while it’s too early to say what caused the crash at this time A-N-B will cooperate with investigators. Transportation Safety Board of Canada spokesperson Chris Krepski tells us they are deploying two investigators to the scene from their offices in Dartmouth and they are expected to arrive sometime tomorrow morning.
The plane is from Atlantic Charters, which has a contract with A-N-B to give air service to Grand Manan. We have attempted to contact the operator of the air service but so far no one is available.
