UPDATED: Utility Asks Customers To Reduce Energy Usage

*Updated at 11:48 a.m. Tuesday*

Saint John Energy issued a Peak Alert on Tuesday as the city dealt with cold temperatures.

The utility announced just after 7 a.m. Tuesday that it was close to hitting peak electricity demand.

It asked customers to reduce their electricity usage, if possible, for the time being.

Just after 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, the utility posted on Twitter that the peak was over.

“Keep an eye on our feed for updates on this peak,” it said.

When the utility experiences peak demand, its wholesale prices go up and fossil-burning peakers have to be turned on.
