The quest for the Stanley Cup will soon come to an end with the Vegas Golden Knights, a brand new expansion team, taking on the veteran Washington Capitals.
At the start of the season, people scoffed at a team in Vegas, and even those drafted to play call themselves misfits no one wanted.
The Golden Knights’ head coach is Gerard Gallant, a man who many Saint John Sea Dogs will remember was once their head coach.
One-time Sea Dogs president Wayne Long tells us he’s not shocked to see Gallant, who led Saint John to the Memorial Cup, make it this far.
“Gerard was a class act, he was very soft-spoken, he was a player’s coach, and he was just an overall good person,” says Long. “We certainly knew from the Sea Dogs organization that that’s what we needed — we needed leadership, we needed someone to instil a winning culture.”
Long says it was a pleasure to watch Gallant’s career advance after the Sea Dogs and he knows all of Saint John will be cheering for the Golden Knights to win the cup.
The first game is Monday night.
