VIDEO: Politicians and Others Support Safe Harbour at King Square Rally

A healthy turnout at a rally to raise awareness about the impending closure of Safe Harbour–where local teens that can’t go home are living.

It opened in March of last year and is due to close in just over a week because of a lack of funding.

Kit Hickey tells CHSJ News she came to the event because rally organizer Cat Bourque invited her and the other members of the Safe Harbour board.

She says the fact the the community is coming out on a chilly night is overwhelming for the Board members.

Cat Bourque was very emotional at the turnout telling the crowd how the staff at Safe Harbour are family for the kids who stay there, waking them every day
for school and work and helping them find assistance dealing with a drug problem or a mental health issue.

Saint John Lancaster MLA Dorothy Shephard says the Conservative MLA’s are working with Dr. Doherty and others to find a way to keep Safe Harbour and they are just waiting to hear back on that.

Safe Harbour is set to close on January 29th.
