The Battle of Vimy Ridge was remembered in Ottawa at the National War Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Federal Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna says the battle to take the ridge was a defining moment for Canada and marked our coming of age as a country but it came at a heavy cost with 35 hundred Canadian soldiers being killed and 7 thousand wounded.
Four Victoria Crosses were awarded for bravery.
After Vimy, the Canadian Corps went from one success to another and won for Canada a separate signature on the Versailles Peace Treaty ending the First World War.
150 thousand Canadians served in the First World War.
