Water Cooler Talk (November 2 – November 8)

Here’s 5 things you can talk about this week with your family, friends and co-workers!

1: Emerging in the 1850s and 1880s as Saint John’s first major suburb, Mount Pleasant became a residential haven for business owners, professionals, and railway workers, away from the industrial noise and marshy valleys below.

2: The tiny white bugs that fill the air every fall are woolly aphids; sometimes called “fairy flies” or “snow bugs”. They look like tiny flying bits of cotton, lint, or snow because their bodies are covered in waxy, white, wool-like filaments. In the autumn, winged adults swarm in the air, often drifting into faces, clothing, or outdoor furniture as they search for host trees to lay their eggs. They do not bite humans, do not transmit diseases, and typically die off naturally with the first hard frost.

3: Port Arthur, Ontario (now part of Thunder Bay) was the first municipality in the world to adopt Daylight Saving Time on July 1, 1908.

4: Men tend to start seeing grey hair slightly earlier (around age 30) than women (around age 35).

5: In November 1986, “Crocodile Dundee”, starring Paul Hogan, was the most popular movie at the box office; dominating the number-one spot for almost the entire month.
