Wednesday Morning Sports For January 18th

Samuel Leblanc and Spencer Smallman each scored twice to lead the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 7-2 win over the Moncton Wildcats.

In the NHL, Auston Matthews, Leo Komarov and Matt Martin each scored in a nine minute span in the second period as the Toronto Maple Leafs rallied to edge Buffalo 4-3 for their 10th win in 13 games. Matthews has 22 goals.

Patrick Sharp scored twice as Dallas hung on for a 7-6 win over the New York Rangers.

Chicago rallied with three goals in the third period for a 6-4 win over Colorado. In other play, it was Columbus 4 Carolina 1, New Jersey 4 Minnesota 3, Ottawa 6 St. Louis 4, Calgary 5 Florida 2, Anaheim 2 Tampa Bay 1 in overtime and Nashville 1 Vancouver 0.

In the National Basketball League, the Moncton Miracles beat the Saint John Riptide 126-105. Anthony Anderson led the Riptide in scoring with 27 points and went seven for eight from the free throw line.

In the NBA, the Toronto Raptors beat Brooklyn 119-109. In other play, it was Miami 109 Houston 103, Dallas 99 Chicago 98, San Antonio 122 Minnesota 114 and Denver 127 Los Angeles Lakers 121.

In “AA” Varsity Boys Basketball, Rothesay High improved to 5 and 0 with an 84-48 win over St. Stephen High. Matt Baker had 32 points for Rothesay High to lead all scorers.

In Varsity Girls Basketball, Harvey High got by Rothesay-Netherwood 52-50. Charlotte Chaisson of Rothesay-Netherwood led all scorers with 22 points.

Baseball Hall of Famer Willie McCovey who played with the San Francisco Giants was one of 273 people to be pardoned or have their sentences commuted by President Barack Obama. McCovey, along with fellow Hall of Famer Duke Snider, pleaded guilty to tax evasion in 1995. The charge stemmed from unreported income received from memorabilia shows.
