What Steps Should You Take If You’re Being Threatened Online?

In the digital media age, not everyone might know what steps to take if they’re threatened online.

RCMP Constable Isabelle Beaulieu says some social media websites may have inbuilt ways to help.

“The first thing you can do is to block that person, and on Facebook you can report any abusive post,” says Beaulieu. “If you do still fear for your safety, the safety of your business, or your family, you have to advise the police as soon as possible.”

She adds it’s helpful if you come to the police prepared as much as possible.

“You’ll have to show the message, you’ll have to show that to give evidence to the police, and after that the police will do an investigation accordingly,” says Beaulieu.

She says police forces across the country work together to solve online threatening cases even if the victims and perpetrators are in different provinces.
