Windshield Repairs Rise In Winter Months

The harsh conditions in winter with snow and freezing rain can take a toll on your windshield.

There have been numerous reports on social media of motorists being struck by large pieces of flying ice that have shattered windshields.

Serge Leblanc of Speedy Auto Glass says it’s a busy time of year for them.

“Winter time, when there is a lot of freezing rain or a really big snowstorm where everything will tend to freeze on the windshield, we tend to see an increase in repairs and replacements,” he said.

“Some days we will do four or five (repairs), while other days we’ll do twelve to fifteen. It is a very, very busy thing we do for the customers.”

He recommends if you get a chip in your windshield smaller than a toonie, get it fixed as soon as possible.

“Whether it is summer or winter, the fluctuation in temperature can have an impact. If it is really cold, and you put on your heat, that can cause it to spread right away. Or if it is hot out and you out on your Air Conditioner, it can cause it to spread as well,” he said.

LeBlanc says if the crack in your windshield spreads, it could turn into a more expensive repair or replacement.

Costly repairs aren’t the only thing to be worried about. Drivers that cause damage from ice not being cleared off properly could get hit with a $172 fine.
