A major winter storm could bring a whole lot of snow — or a whole lot of rain — to the area later this weekend.
Environment Canada says a developing storm in the southern United States is expected to approach the region on Sunday.
“All indications show a major snowfall event for areas north of the track of the low, a major rainfall event south of the track of the low, and significant amounts of snow, rain and potential for an extended freezing rain event near the track of the low,” read a special weather statement issued Wednesday afternoon.

Forecasters say snowfall amounts could exceed 30 centimetres while rainfall amounts could surpass 50 millimetres.
They say potential tracks right now range from central New Brunswick to the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia.
“Even a slight shift in [the storm’s] track will have major effects on the type and amount of precipitation received,” said the weather agency.
Environment Canada says details should become clearer as the weekend approaches.
