Women Were Influential In St. Martins Shipbuilding Industry

The community of St. Martins might be tiny but in the 19th century it was a shipbuilding giant being the third largest producer of wooden sailing vessels in the Maritimes and the Quaco Museum is shining a light on the role women had in that industry.

Manager Eric Bartlett says it was captain David Vaughan’s wife, Rachel, that helped get the first ship built in St. Martins.

That ship was named the Rachel.

Bartlett says women who traveled on the ships tended to keep good records and diaries while the men didn’t

The Quaco museum is located at 236 Main Street in St. Martins.
