Women’s council backs move to cover clinical abortions

A New Brunswick women’s group says the changes to provide greater access to abortion is a win for women’s rights.

It is in response to the province’s move to fund clinical abortions brought forward by Premier Susan Holt on Thursday.

The New Brunswick Women’s Council says the previous law undermined the right to choose and gender minorities.

But the council says the government must make sure this is not symbolic and leads to more abortion access across the province.

“Government and its partners now need to ensure that the amendment of 84-20 is not just symbolic but leads to substantive improvements in abortion access,” said Council co-chair Jennifer Richard of Sexual Violence New Brunswick. “It is promising that this has already been identified as a next step.”

The group added many people and organizations have been advocating for this since abortion was decriminalized in 1988.
