Woodstock reviews safety at raceway following child’s death

A New Brunswick town is reviewing raceway safety after a tragic death over the weekend.

A three-year-old boy died after being struck by the starting gate during a harness race in Woodstock.

Town officials announced Tuesday they have begun a comprehensive safety review of Connell Park Raceway.

“This is a necessary and important step to ensure that any future events held at the venue are safe for both participants and spectators,” the town said in a statement on its website.

Staff will look at plans for upcoming events to see if they can go ahead before the review is completed.

This includes upcoming harness racing events and any other large-scale gatherings scheduled to take place at the facility.

“We understand the immense effort, time, and resources that go into organizing community events,” Mayor Trina Jones said in the statement.

“We are committed to working with our event partners to support them through this process. At the same time, we must ensure that due diligence is done to protect the public and prevent future accidents.”

Woodstock police have said the death is being investigated as an accident.
