Work To Begin On City Market Pedway Upgrade Beginning Next Week

Construction work to replace the escalators and lift at the bottom of the Saint John City Market will be getting underway next week.

Facility Manager with the City Trevor Gamblin tells us the existing lift will be replaced with a full-service passenger elevator and they will be taking out the down-escalator and installing an up-only escalator which he says will have energy-efficient features. He says the escalator will run at a slower speed when no one is on it and when someone approaches it, it begins to speed up and by the time the person arrives it is at full speed.

On Monday, the escalators and part of the upper landing will be closed off for work to begin on the site. You will, however, still be able to access the stairwell and elevator. It’s expected a full closure of the entire pedway entrace will take place from the middle of March until the expected end of the project at the end of June.

The market will stay open during normal business hours for the entirety of the project.

The contract price for this job is just under $800,000 plus HST.
