You Can Have Your Say On Damaged Covered Bridge

If you want to have your say on the future of the Hammond River covered bridge on Route 860, you’ll have your chance tonight at a public meeting in Hampton from 7 until 8:30 at the Lighthouse River Centre on Main Street.

Part of the bridge went down October 5th after an excavator crashed through through the decking to the embankment below. The bridge has been out of commission ever since.

The provincial Transportation Department is looking at two options which are fixing the bridge or replacing it was a new modular bridge.

Repairing the bridge will take from 8 to 9 months after which, height and weight restrictions would still be in place. Transportation Minister Bill Fraser is promising a decisiond will be made as early as next week.

The Hammond River covered bridge was built in 1912 and is one of 60 still left in the province.
