Youth charged in alleged Saint John shooting

Saint John police say a 16-year-old has been charged in connection with an alleged shooting.

First responders were called to the 200-block of Duke Street shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday.

“On arrival, officers located a 30-year-old man who had allegedly been shot,” police said in a news release.

The victim was treated in the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.

Police said two 15-year-old boys and two 16-year-old boys were arrested shortly after. One of the youths was allegedly in possession of a firearm.

Staff Sgt. Sean Rocca, a spokesperson for the police force, confirmed Thursday that a 16-year-old has since appeared in court.

He is charged with possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number.

Rocca said the three other youths were released on undertakings to appear in court in October.

“Because investigators are still gathering and evaluating evidence, there is no confirmation on final charges at this time,” he said in an email.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Saint John Police Force at 506-648-3333 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
