UPDATE: Man Arrested After Nature Park Lockdown

Saint John police say a man has been arrested after an hours-long lockdown of the Irving Nature Park.

Spokesperson Jim Hennessy said they were made aware of a vehicle make its way toward the city at a “high rate of speed” by the RCMP early Wednesday morning.

Hennessy said the vehicle crashed through a gate at the west side park just after 2 a.m. Wednesday.

“The SJPF Emergency Tactical Unit was activated and the Nature Park was locked down as negotiations began with the driver of the vehicle,” said Hennessy in a news release.

Hennessy said the driver surrendered to police and was taken into custody just after 10 a.m. Wednesday.

A man in his early 20s is facing several charges, including dangerous driving and hit and run. The Major Crime Unit is investigating.
