A Familiar Canadian Anthem Gets a New Spin Ahead of the 2026 World Cup

One of Canada’s most recognizable rock songs has been given a modern update just as the country prepares for its biggest sporting spotlight yet.

The reimagined version of Ahead By a Century — originally released by The Tragically Hip in 1996 — is a collaboration between City and Colour’s Dallas Green, Ruby Waters, and producer Boi-1da. The track was created in partnership with Canada Soccer and will appear on What If It All Goes Right?

The timing is deliberate. From June 11 to July 19, 2026, Canada will share hosting duties for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the United States and Mexico, with matches set for Toronto and Vancouver. Thirteen games will be played on Canadian soil, including appearances by the Canadian men’s national team.

What If It All Goes Right? gathers a wide range of Canadian artists across genres, including contributions from Alessia Cara, Charlotte Cardin, Jessie Reyez, Nelly Furtado, Zeds Dead, ekkstacy, and others.

This new take on Ahead By a Century strips away much of the original’s drive and replaces it with a slower, more restrained mood. Green’s vocals are subdued and echoing, while Waters comes in with a cleaner, more polished delivery than her usual grit-heavy sound. Producer Boi-1da’s approach is minimal, keeping the focus on the vocals.
