Douglas ‘Doug’ Bertram Maxwell passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Doug was born on July 29, 1948 in Saint John, NB to the late Bertram and Jessie (Wagg) Maxwell.
Doug will be dearly missed by his wife and partner of 44 years, Barbara nee Hellier (Spears) Maxwell, their children; Andrew Maxwell (Sarah), Shawn Spears, (Annette Banks), Randy Spears, Lisa Ann Ratcliffe (Stephen), and Rick Spears (Min), brother Lawrence Maxwell (Louise), grandchildren; Selah, Brooke, Desiree, Douglas, David, Elizabeth, Mya, Nick, Patrick, Victoria, Madison and MacKenzie, niece Wendy, several nephews and many cousins.
Doug worked several different jobs over the years. Doug has been a long-haul truck driver, taxi driver, worked for Parker D. Mitchell, drove ambulance, and lastly, he worked for the Department of Transportation operating the Grand Bay Westfield Ferry and several other provincial ferries until his retirement. Doug and Barb had a wonderful 44 years together, they loved going for walks, Sunday drives that never ended; they once ended up in Prince Edward Island and going for tea and a doughnut at Tim Hortons after supper.
Arrangements are under the care of Castle Fallsview Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John, NB E2M 2L3, 506-634-1701. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 11th from 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon. A Funeral Service will follow immediately at 12:00 Noon in Castle Fallsview Chapel. Interment will take place Ocean View Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers donations in Doug’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Lung Association, Portland United Church, Westfield United Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
