It is with great sadness that the family of Hilary Brenda James announces her passing on May 31, 2026, at the age of 85.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on July 11, 1940, Hilary lived a life rich in love, laughter, compassion, and adventure. Known for her kind heart and caring nature, she touched the lives of all who knew her. Her warm smile, generous spirit, and unwavering support brought comfort and joy to family, friends, and even strangers fortunate enough to cross her path.

Hilary possessed a wonderfully wicked and delightfully raunchy sense of humor that endeared her to everyone she met and perfectly complemented her warm, engaging personality. She had a remarkable ability to make people laugh, feel welcome, and enjoy life’s lighter moments, leaving behind countless cherished memories and stories.

A devoted animal lover, Hilary found great joy in the companionship of her pets throughout her life. She was also an enthusiastic traveler who embraced new experiences and destinations with curiosity and excitement. A true foodie at heart, she delighted in sharing meals, discovering new cuisines, and bringing people together around the table.

Together, Hilary and her beloved husband, Bob, devoted many happy summers to hosting family and friends aboard their boat, creating treasured memories filled with laughter, conversation, and togetherness. Those fortunate enough to gather with them will fondly remember Hilary’s hospitality, especially her delicious lobster dinners, which became a cherished tradition and will be greatly missed.

Hilary will be lovingly reunited with her parents, Frank and Hilda (Ritchie) Smith; her beloved husband, Robert James; her daughter, Eileen James, and her brother, Ronald Smith.

She leaves behind her loving children, Pauline Murphey (Richard Murphey) of Toronto, Ontario, and Leslie James of Saint John, New Brunswick. She is also survived by her siblings, Howard Smith, and Elaine Smith, of Edinburgh, Scotland, as well as many much-loved grandchildren, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Hilary’s legacy of kindness, laughter, love, and devotion to those she held dear will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Though she will be deeply missed.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, New Brunswick (506-634-7424 (tel:506-634-7424)). In keeping with Hilary’s wishes, there will be no services at this time. A private celebration of life in memory of Hilary will be announced at a later date.
