July 17, 1951 – May 29, 2026
It is with great sadness that we share the sudden passing of our beloved David George Hayward on May 29, 2026.
He will be missed by his wife, Mary Catherine (Cathy) Hayward; daughters, Barbara, Jennifer, and Elizabeth (Babette); grandchildren Oliver, Maude, Celeste, and a baby grandson on the way; his brother, Mark; and countless dear friends.
He was predeceased by his brother, Peter; his father, William; and his mother, Joyce.
David was born on July 17, 1951, in Saint John, New Brunswick. He graduated from Saint John High School and later attended Carleton University. After obtaining his Chartered Professional Accountant designation, he worked in private industry, where he earned the nickname “Words” for his extensive vocabulary and intellect. He later co-owned the multi-generational businesses Hayward & Warwick China and Gifts, W.H. Hayward & Co., and other retail enterprises in Saint John for decades.
He was passionate about the local community, serving on several boards, including the New Brunswick Children’s Foundation. He was a lover of nature and a member of the Saint John Outdoor Enthusiast Club. He was especially fond of spending time on Belleisle Bay along the Saint John (Wolastoq) River with his friends and family. In his younger days, he competed in—and often won—his age category in triathlons and marathons. Notably, he maintained his athleticism in his later years through swimming in the Bay and at the YMCA pool, canoeing, cycling, curling, skiing, hiking, and walking his beloved dogs, Mogi and Delilah.
David loved travel, adventure, life, people, laughter, finance, history, weather, and helping others. He had a special gift for putting everyone at ease, no matter their story, and never passed judgment on others. He will be fondly remembered for his generosity, kindness, curiosity, and gentle spirit. His memory will remain forever in our hearts and minds.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Ross and Dr. Bewick for their excellent care over the years.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the New Brunswick Children’s Foundation.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (506) 634-7424.
