Imperial Plans To Install New Marquee With LED Displays

Saint John’s historic Imperial Theatre is planning on installing a new modern feature to its more than century-old facade.

A new marquee is in the works to replace the one that’s welcomed theatre-goers since 1994 when the building re-opened as the Imperial Theatre. This new marquee would be three-faced and feature digital LED displays.

Executive director Angela Campbell says they want to stay true to their long history.

“That being said, what we can do with our current marquee is very limited because we use magnetic lettering,” says Campbell.

“What we worked with with both Saint John Heritage and the architects was developing a design that would allow us to incorporate digital screens so that we have a little more flexibility with how much we can advertise on the front of the building and what we can say.”

The heritage board has approved a heritage permit for the project and the next stop is the Planning Advisory Committee, which meets on April 17. They are now looking at finding the funds to build, purchase and install the new marquee.

Campbell says they are early in the planning stages so the timeline for this new marquee project is still a bit open and the cost is still being worked out.
