Apartment Complex To Replace Jelly Bean Buildings Making Progress

The mixed-income housing development planned for the land where the colourful Jelly Bean buildings once stood is moving right along with groundbreaking expected in late fall or early 2019.

Saint John Non-Profit Housing president Lisa Keenan says they have preliminary plans designed by Acre Architects and are in the process of sending them on to the province for approval.

“There are elements that will be incorporated into the building from when the Jelly Bean buildings were on that site,” says Keenan, “so there is a recognition that there were buildings before there that had some historical significance.”

It will be a 44-unit building with mostly two bedroom apartments. The bottom of the unit is zoned for commercial use, so Keenan says they may have a restaurant area there and they also hope to have parking available for the tenants.

We’re told the figures are subject to change but that this is a probably $7-million project in total, with the mortgage in the range of about $6-million, financing from the province at around $800,000 and SJNPH possibly putting in about $500,000.
