Saint John Officer Busts Myth Cannabis Makes You A Better Driver

A Saint John police officer is busting the myth that smoking pot makes you a better driver.

According to stats from the federal government, one in five people do not believe they’re a worse driver when they smoke or otherwise consume pot and half believe it doesn’t impact it all that much.

Constable Travis Jones is the department’s coordinator for the standardized field sobriety tests and the drug recognition expert program and he says it’s absolutely, conclusively incorrect.

“Cannabis impairs your ability operate a motor vehicle, period. No one is a better driver when they ingest cannabis.”

Cst. Jones says they have the means to detect and deal with drug-impaired driving 24/7 and 365 days a year including cannabis-impaired drivers.

“We will be looking for them. Now, tomorrow, after the 17th of October and moving forward every day after that,” says Cst. Jones.

“We have the means, and if I would caution anyone I would say, don’t test the waters in that respect.”

October 17 is when cannabis will be legalized in Canada.
