Saint John is getting a combined $125,000 from the provincial and federal governments to help host the Canada 55+ Games later this month.
The announcement was made on Wednesday at Shamrock Field — one of the many venues where events will take place.
Barb Curry, a co-chair of the games, told our newsroom the money has allowed them to hire Kevin Babin as a games manager to look after all the planning.
“There’s a lot of organization for logistics and registration and accommodations that we have to take care, and all of our transportation too, so he’s helping us to do that,” said Curry.

Nearly 2,300 athletes and their families will be in Saint John for the event, which runs from August 21 to 24.
Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long told us investing in an event like this is a no-brainer.
“The economic spinoffs are profound and substantial,” said Long. “This event, over four days, will contribute well over $3 million to the greater Saint John, southern New Brunswick economy.”
