St. Croix Getting Ready To Embrace First Ever Pride Week

Bordertown will soon be a lot more colorful, with the first ever St. Croix Pride Week.

One of the organizers behind St. Croix Pride, Sue Weatherby, who is also a member of the LGBTQ community, says she wants St. Croix Pride to help those who may be feeling alone in a small town because of who they are, or who they want to be. “My real goal in doing this, in what part I play in all of this, is to show people in a small town, Calais (Maine) as well as any surrounding areas, that you’re not alone, that there are other people, you don’t need to live in the proverbial closet. You can come out and meet like-minded people and have some fun.”

Weatherby refers to the Pride March last fall where hundreds came out to support the St. Stephen Middle School and their hopes of painting a rainbow crosswalk, “To see the faces of some people that have told me that was the first time they ever dared to wear a rainbow in their community, it just blew me away. It was life changing for me.”

She said after that march, it became apparent a more structured annual event was needed in St. Stephen.

St. Croix Pride Week will begin Monday, August 13th, and last until Sunday, August 19th, with a number of family-friendly events, such as the Community Outreach, a Pride Church Service at the Kirk McColl United Church, and a Rainbow Family Fair and BBQ.
