The Dennis Oland case will not be going to the country’s highest court for a second time as the Supreme Court of Canada has dismissed appeal requests from both sides.
The Crown was seeking to have Oland’s second-degree murder conviction in the 2011 bludgeoning death of his father, high-profile businessman Richard Oland in Saint John, reinstated while the the defence had filed a cross-appeal seeking acquittal.
This means that scheduling of Dennis Oland’s new trial date can go ahead.
It was in October of last year that Oland’s conviction was overturned by the New Brunswick Court of Appeal and a new trial ordered. Oland is currently out on bail, with conditions.
There’s no word on exactly when a new date for a trial could be set, but it could happen possibly as early as next month at the next Motions Day.
Back in March, the Supreme Court ruled that Dennis Oland was wrongly denied bail while he awaited appeal of his murder conviction.
