Rothesay Coming Out In Support Of Cyclists

The provincial government is being urged by the town of Rothesay to carefully consider measures to improve cycling safety. This follows the death over Christmas of international cyclist Ellen Watters of Sussex.

Holly McKay of Saint John Cycling says there are drivers out there who try to make life as difficult as possible for cyclists by trying to intimidate them.

Rothesay points out the town has made a concerted effort since 2012 to develop bike lanes on most main streets and roads with a standard width of 1.5 metres.

Cyclists are calling for Ellen’s Law to be enacted that would stipulate drivers have to stay at least a metre away from cyclists.

McKay says many drivers don’t seem to understand that, by law, cyclists have to use the roads.
