The provincial government is committing $750,000 toward costs associated with the 2019 Brier, if Moncton is chosen to host the national men’s curling championship.
“Moncton and New Brunswick have a great history of hosting world-class events,” said Finance Minister Cathy Rogers. “Securing the Brier in 2019 would be another great opportunity to show the rest of Canada and the world that we are capable of hosting such top-notch sporting events.”
Rogers spoke on behalf of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Donald Arseneault, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.
“Having hosted two Briers in the past, and most recently the under-18 national championships last April, we are confident that Moncton can do it again,” said Deputy Mayor Charles Léger. “We are excited that the Brier could be the first major event in our new events centre.”
The City of Moncton and a local bid committee recently submitted an application to Curling Canada.
Funding is conditional on Moncton’s bid being accepted.
