There’s no determination yet on whether the province or the contractor was responsible for an excavator going through the Hammond River covered bridge at French Village. WorkSafe NB is still investigating.
The bridge has been closed since October of last year. Hampton MLA Gary Crossman says it appears the province would prefer to take the covered bridge down and build a modular bridge where the covered bridge stands now even though Transportation Mifnister Bill Fraser has not said.
Crossman says he has heard from people who want the bridge preserved while others are more concerned with not having to go out of their way as they go back and forth.
Fraser says there are many bridges around the province in need of repairs and he blames the previous Conservative government for cutting the bridge budget in half. The Conservative MLA Gary Crossman doesn’t see what’s accomplished by pointing the finger of blame.
