Common Council Approves Taxi Fare Changes

Official approval was given by Common Council for new taxi meter rates here in Saint John.

The rate will now rise from 3 to 5 dollars as soon as you get in the cab, but once you get going the rate will drop from $1.64 per kilometre to $1.10.

Mayor Don Darling says the city needs to support the Taxi Advisory Committee with the recommendations it brought forward but Councillor Ray Strowbridge says there’s no solution that will make everyone happy and judging by the emails he has received, it’s chaos out there.

The city’s new taxi bylaw, making meters mandatory in cabs, came into effect in the beginning of June.

The third and final reading of the cab bylaw amendment was passed unanimously by Common Council.
