Lobster Fishermen Frustrated By Low Prices For Catches

The fall lobster season in the Northumberland Strait is only a week old and fishermen have already become frustrated by the low prices at the wharf.

Prices in the spring were high but now fishermen say processors are only giving them $4.25 per pound for canners and $4.75 for market lobsters.

Maritime Fishermen’s Union organizer Michel Richard says some fishermen are protesting and have tied up their boats.

“For us, we are still insiting that the price should be $5 per pound (for canners) and $5.50 (for market lobster) even with the impact of our dollar appreciating,” he notes.

Richard says typically prices are adjusted later in the fall season and he hopes to have discussions with processors to ensure that prices don’t go any lower.
