Smoking remains a significant problem in New Brunswick with higher rates being reported compared to the rest of Canada.
Dr. Jennifer Russell says nicotine is one of the most addictive substances readily available.
She notes how 30 percent of one-time users become addicted and 86 percent of smokers who attempt to butt out are not successful.
Dr. Russell adds the number of smokers has been dropping thanks to legislation changes in recent years and the fact that smoking is becoming less socially acceptable.
She adds many of the measures the province has taken are to ensure that young people – who tend to be more vulnerable – don’t start smoking.
This was National Non-Smoking Week in Canada.
