City police are warning drivers to avoid Paddock Street between Coburg and Waterloo because of a natural gas leak.

Nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution.
Police, fire crews and representatives from Enbridge were all at the scene.

Construction has been taking place on Paddock where there is a strong smell of gas.
