Conservative Leadership Candidate Says Air Fares Are Too High

The federal government is using airports as a cash cow which is why it’s so expensive to fly in this country. That claim is being made by Maxime Bernier who’s running for the leadership of the federal Conservative Party.

Bernier says he wants to privatise the airports and open up the industry to more competition.

Bernier charges the federal government has collected 5 billion dollars in rent from airport land since 1992, which is a practice he would put an end to, but not invested anything in the airports themselves.

He also claims Pearson Airport in Toronto is the 4th most expensive in the world to land in and Canada is ranked 121st among 141 countries when it comes to cost competitiveness to fly.
